Mikkel Kessler proved that he still has some pop, but he had to shrug off a scare from Allan Green while taking the vacant WBC silver light heavyweight crown in Copenhagen, Denmark on Saturday. The 33 year-old Dane, who rose to 45-2, was sent to the mat in round one by Green, off a right hand and a flurry follow, but did the loser one better when he closed the show with a hellacious left hook which zombified the fighter from Oklahoma in the fourth.
The 32 year-old Green dropped to 31-4 when he was dropped by the ex longtime super middleweight titlist, off the left hook. The finishing blow came when Green was starting his own left hook, but he never finished his.
As for Green, he has lost every step up bout he has taken, except for a win over Tarvis Simms in 2009. He's dropped bouts to Edison Miranda, Andre Ward, Glen Johnson, and now Kessler. This opportunity, I believe, only came about because manager Greg Leon worked his tail off to get this scrap for the vet. If he wants to continue, sad to say, it will likely be as nothing but a steppingstone. Leon probably won't be able to get his guy another title crack, though we can never say never with some of those soft Euros who always manage to find the softest of the soft touches for their title defenses.
So, where does this leave the Dane? He

Northern California’s Melissa McMorrow (7-3-3) shocked Susi Kentikian (29-1, 16 KOs) with a majority decision win to capture various flyweight world titles in Germany on Wednesday.
That’s the kicker. It happened in Germany.
Meanwhile, last weekend WBC flyweight titleholder Mariana Juarez (34-5-3, 16 KOs) knocked down and defeated former IBF flyweight titleholder Arely Mucino (15-2-1, 8 KOs) by split decision in Mexico City. That sets up a possible showdown of the three best flyweights.
Before the upset win it wasn’t even thinkable to have a form of flyweight tournament between champions. Kentikian’s refusal to fight any where but Germany messed up any thoughts of a tournament. Instead, it was merely a pipe dream. That’s all over now.
The other two premier flyweights are Mexico’s Juarez and another Northern Californian Ava Knight, who now holds the IBF world title.
Juarez welcomes a fight with either Northern Californian.
“I feel that both have qualities. Melissa is a tank but Ava is quality boxer,” says Juarez, 32, who has defended the title six times in a year including her win over Mucino last Saturday in Mexico City.
Juarez is no stranger to fighting in the United States and Knight is no stranger to fighting in Mexico. The San Francisco-based fighter’s last engagement took place in Los Cabos, Mexico on March 31. She beat Hongfah Tor Buamas by technical knockout.

Andre Berto, the ex welterweight champion and current Florida resident, has tested positive for a banned substance, which means his June 23 rematch with Victor Ortiz will likely be cancelled. This is the second high profile PED case to hit boxing in ten days, right on the heels of Lamont Peterson's positive test for testosterone which cancelled his Saturday rematch with Amir Khan.
Berto, age 28, has a 28-1 record, with 22 KOs; that lone blemish came at the hands of Ortiz. They tangled in a thriller back in April 2011. Berto hit the deck in the first and sixth rounds, Ortiz hit the mat in the second and sixth, as well. The California boxer snagged a UD12 in the first scrap. They'd signed to meet on Feb. 11 but Berto had to postpone that re-do after he tore a bicep in training.
Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer, the co-promoter of the rematch, told ESPN's Dan Rafael that he got word on Saturday that Berto's 'A' test was flagged, and then his 'B' test also came up dirty. He was told of that result on Friday.
The prohibited substance was norandrosterone, according to Victor Conte, the ex Balco chief who has been working as a consultant with the ex champ in the last year. He advised Berto on what supplements he should be taking, and on training and rest procedures. Conte has been quite vocal of late that the sport is full of PED users, and needs heavy-duty

Love it or hate it, heavyweight boxing makes or breaks the sport. American fight fans might be dismayed over the lack of burgeoning heavyweight talent on the home front (Seth Mitchell notwithstanding), but the division is alive and well internationally.
Beyond the obvious case of the Klitschko brothers, who have enjoyed a historic stranglehold on the division for what seems like a decade (in reality it’s been about eight years), international fans of boxing’s glory division have also been treated recently to a number of up-and-comers.
Fighters from across the pond, like Tyson Fury and Mike Perez, are filling fight fans full of hope, and David Price (12-0, 10 KOs) just might be in pole position in the race for most likely to become world champion.
Price is a six-foot, eight-inch monster with a killer jab and serious power in his right hand. He fights clean and hard, and so far he seems eager to use his size the way fight fans expect. Price makes his opponents come to him, and when they do he unloads on them with heavy-handed combinations. He’s not as polished or fluid as Wladimir Klitschko, and he’s yet to prove his toughness the way Vitali has, but he’s definitely on the shortlist of people who could someday conceivably defeat either of the brothers (or at the very least succeed them as champion when they retire).
Price shared the super heavyweight bronze medal in the 2008 Olympics with fellow heavyweight hopeful Deontay Wilder from the

GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS SIGNS WORLD CHAMPION JOHAN PEREZ AND FORMER AMATEUR STAR JULIAN RAMIREZ
LOS ANGELES, May 17 The best roster in boxing added to its luster this week with Golden Boy Promotions' signing of current WBA Interim Super Lightweight World Champion Johan Perez and unbeaten former amateur standout Julian Ramirez to multi-year promotional agreements.
"This is a big day for us and I'm proud to have these two boxers fighting for us now," said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. "Boxing will never grow if we don't keep cultivating new talent and in Johan and Julian, we've signed two fighters that you're going to be hearing a lot about in the months and years to come."
A 28-year-old native of Caracas, Venezuela, Johan Perez (15-0-1, 12 KO's) turned professional in 2005 and rang up five consecutive knockout victories. Following a two-year layoff resulting from the lack of professional boxing events being promoted in Venezuela, he returned in 2009 and steam-rolled through all comers, with the only blemish on his record being a 2011 draw with 16-0 fellow prospect Alberto Mosquera. Along the way, Perez fought anyone, anywhere, with stops in Panama, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, England and Mexico garnering him a solid fanbase and the WBA Fedecentro and WBA Fedelatin super lightweight titles. In October of 2011, he stunned highly-regarded Kenny Galarza with a fourth round technical knockout victory and less than two months later, he won the WBA Interim Super Lightweight World

A Woman was left feeling saddened that our culture of celebrity worship has bestowed heroic status on Floyd Mayweather, and given precious little attention to people he has hurt.
I have studied boxing from the perspective of a woman being initiated and integrated into the sport as a fan. I have learned that boxing is full of outstanding young men and women, who honor their families, their countries and themselves with the hard work, tenacity and the gutty spirit it takes to be a fighter. What’s not to love about all that?
My previous columns amounted in effect to endorsements of the sport. Like all sports, boxing has its share of good guys and bad guys. It certainly has its share of those who have dallied on the wrong side of the law. Some of them have been guests of state prison systems. I have great respect for men like Bernard Hopkins, who have paid for their misdeeds against society and have come out dedicated to excellence.
I found myself pondering all of this as I watched the May 4 weigh-in for the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto. The state of Nevada allowed Floyd to postpone serving a jail term so he could fight Miguel and earn a reported minimum purse of $32 million. Hundreds of local school children and their teachers and parents filed into the arena to watch the weigh-in spectacle. These beautiful children and their teachers and parents cheered for Floyd,

Naoki Fukuda, who shoots for RINGTV.com, was the biggest individual winner in the Boxing Writers Association of America photography contest, known as the “Barneys” in honor of the late BWAA president, Barney Nagler.
Along with those placing in the BWAA writing contest, the photographers whose work was judged mostly highly by the photo staff of the judges, from Philadelphia Media Holdings, will be recognized at the 87th annual BWAA Awards Dinner on June 6 at the Copacabana in New York City.
Fukuda took first place in the Action Photo category, for a shot of a face-contorting punch landed by Erislandy Lara against Paul Williams in their July 9, 2011, bout in Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall. He also was second in the Feature Photo category, for a shot of Nonito Donaire bounding around the ring after his second-round stoppage of Fernando Montiel on Feb. 19, 2011, at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Will Hart, of HBO Sports, took top honors in the Feature Photo category for his picture of a prone and semi-conscious Craig McEwan having his mouthpiece removed by the referee in a March 12, 2011, bout at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.
Chris Cozzone, of Fightnews.com, like Fukuda placed in both categories, taking second in Action for a shot of Gilbert Gastelum’s mouthpiece flying after being nailed by a right hand from Mike Lee in their May 6, 2011, fight in Las Vegas, and a third in Feature for his shot of a

Native Americans are often misrepresented as something out of the past rather than a people of a present.
More than any other group perhaps, they are often defined by images and ideals from days gone by—or perhaps more accurately—by cinematic representations of such things which have had a tendency to be overly romanticized by an entertainment-hungry American public.
There is nothing wrong with celebrating the past. Indeed, there are many fascinating things from Native American history worth of celebration.Like many nations who help people this planet, Native Americans have provided rich contributions to the fabric of our society. American Indian governments served as the models for representative democracies, they were the first to raise honeybees and turkeys to produce food, and they made numerous discoveries in the fields of mathematics, medicine and science.
Yet for all their accomplishments, Native Americans have had comparatively few sports heroes. Sure, Jim Thorpe was lauded by his contemporaries.Olympic medalist Abel Kiviat called Thorpe “the greatest athlete to ever live,” but how many other Native American athletes can you name (if you could name Thorpe to begin with) without the help of an Internet search engine?
Now name the boxers. Joe Hipp anyone? Danny Lopez? The list gets much more obscure after that. (Boxing historians might note that while all-time greats Joe Louis and Henry Armstrong claimed Native American heritage as well, they are generally not considered Native American boxers.)
George “Comanche Boy” Tahdooahnippah (pronounced tad-uh-napper) wants to change that. A middleweight prospect from the

Manny Pacquiao, the boxer turned boxer-Congressman who has found himself in territory that rival Floyd Mayweather is more accustomed to, counterpunching the press which had cornered him, some could argue, on the rhetorical ropes, has made clear his stance on same-sex marriage, and what he thinks of gay people.
The clarifying remarks made by Pacquiao to the Associated Press on Wednesday came after several days of a burgeoning controversy which stemmed from an interview he gave to Conservative Examiner writer Granville Ampong. That piece ran on May 14, and it gave the impression, in the minds of many readers, that Pacquiao was so opposed to same-sex marriage, and President Obama's personal embrace of it, that he supported the antiquated Old Testament passage from Leviticus, which reads: "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”
The Ampong piece in fact does not state that Pacquiao quoted the passage, but because it was poorly written, that was the impression many media outlets and fight fans received. Pacquiao was accused of trafficking, by some, in "hate speech." So he went into counter-punching mode. "I'm not against the gay people," Pacquiao said to the AP. "I'm not condemning them. I have a cousin (who is) gay. I have relatives (who are) gay. I have a lot of friends (who are)

SERGIO MARTINEZ IS TRULY "MARAVILLA" IN ARGENTINA
STAR-POWER SHINING BRIGHTER THAN EVER IN HOME COUNTRY
New York, NY (5/17/12) It has been exactly two months since Middleweight kingpin Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez defended his crown against Matthew Macklin on St. Patrick's Day, scoring a thrilling 11th-round TKO over the Irishman before a raucous sold-out crowd at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in easily one of the most entertaining fights shown live on HBO in 2012. Martinez now awaits the upcoming WBC Middleweight Championship bout between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Andy Lee, which will take place on June 16, in Laredo, TX, to see who he will face next. While he waits, Martinez has kept himself extremely busy, especially in his native country of Argentina, where his popularity continues to soar to super stardom levels. Most recently, Martinez was asked to participate in the upcoming season of Bailando por un Sueño, which is Argentina's version of "Dancing with the Stars" and considered the most popular television program in the entire country. Last year, Mike Tyson was one of the contestants on the show.
When Martinez was recently interviewed by renowned television host Alejandro Fantino on "Animales Sueltos," the show received a monster 6.7 rating. Martinez discussed a number of topics during the roughly 40-minute long interview (to watch the video, click here).
Next up for the charismatic Martinez was an appearance on the stand-up comedy show, Duro de Domar, hosted by Daniel Tognetti.

MONTREAL (May 17, 2012) Based on his last five fights, sensational super middleweight Adonis Stevenson (18-1, 15 KOs)is more than living-up to his nickname, "Superman."
Stevenson and his promoter, Yvon Michel, as well as his Hall of Fame manager/trainer, Emanuel Steward, believe he's ready to fight any of the 168-pound world champions or top contenders.
Stevenson's last five fight fights been against opponents who had had a combined professional record of 107-8 prior to stepping in the ring to fight "Superman" 28-1 Noe Gonzalez (TKO2), 27-1 Jesus Gonzales, 16-3 Aaron Pryor, Jr. (TKO9), 11-1 Shujaa El-Amin (TKO1) and Derek Edwards (KO3). All but Gonzales (only once) had never been knocked out before fighting "Superman."
Stevenson's display case has collapsed from the added weight of all his stored title belts: (reigning) WBC Silver, IBF Inter-Continental, NABA, NABO, plus WBC International, WBC Continental Americas, and Canadian straps Adonis formerly held.
All he's missing now is a world title belt, something he hopes to acquire this year, given a legitimate shot to challenge. "Superman" is qualified to fight any of the world super middleweight champions as a world-rated contender in each of the four major governing bodies: #2 IBF, #3 WBC, #7 WBA & WBO.
The dream match for the Haitian-born Stevenson, who lives in the Montreal of Longueuill, is, of course, a showdown in Montreal with IBF champion Lucian Bute. But he's making a title defense May 26 against Carl Froch. WBA Super and WBC champion Andre Ward is practically

Peterson and Khan were set to renew hostilities on Saturday, but a failed Peterson drug test messed up that plan. Still, we have some solid scraps to look forward to.
Amir “King” Khan and Lamont “Havoc” Peterson were supposed to resume their clash this Saturday in Las Vegas. It would have been a very interesting rematch.
As most fans know Peterson failed a random drug test that he had asked for as a requirement to make the fight. What irony.
Still there are many fights rumbling forward for the next two months including a blockbuster mixed martial arts card that was almost upended for yet another drug test failure.
Ultimate Fighting Championship 146 begins the fight factory assembly line on May 26 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Five heavyweight bouts will highlight the fight card including UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos defending against Frank Mir.
Alistair Overeem was scheduled to challenge Brazil’s hard-hitting heavyweight but the British prizefighter failed the drug test. Mir replaces him.
“Apparently he (Overeem) got suspended for nine months. He got caught for taking anti inflammatory drugs. It was pretty simple the rules are cut and clear,” said Dana White, president of UFC while in West Hollywood. “He’s going to have to do a suspension and they are going to test him. He probably thought they were testing him a lot now, it’s going to be worse. I’m just pissed off.”
