In the fitness world, it hardly gets a mention, but the diet or what we eat is about as important as anything else you will ever do in the field. Being competent in the kitchen is absolutely paramount. And the struggle which causes a lot of problems for many people is in part, is not knowing how to cook, the other problem is not knowing what to cook. This book can’t help too much with the first problem but it can certainly help you to wipe out the second.
I think cutting fat in your diet is a bit like robbing the bank.
Fat is not always the #1 enemy but it‘ll hardly if ever be your ally in this game.
In short, either nail the diet or suffer more frustration in your program. If you choose to ignore it you’ll end up trying to strip excess fat stores and thereby this will take up your precious time and take you from other things that you should be able to concentrate on within your training program.
Now back to the book review. As the title suggests there are over 400 recipes to choose from. The categories are broken down into soups, snacks, meat, pasta’s, seafood, vegetables and salads. Moreover there is a great deal of information at the front of the book that gives guidelines on how to prepare and cook fat free meals.
I’ve had this book since 2002 and have used it frequently since then. I’ve also cooked for others and received the thumbs up just about every time. The true benefit in my mind, is that you can really cook stuff that looks and tastes fattening (all fattening foods tastes nice!) but just isn’t. The variety of food that can be prepared in this manner is amazing and really blows the lid of what it means to eat healthy, fresh food.
Measurements are given in both imperial and metric form so no matter what country you’re from you shouldn’t have any problems with obtaining the right proportions for recipes. Most people eat with their eyes and this book contains some beautiful photos to boot so it helps give you a better idea of what the dish might turn out like or even might give you an idea as to texture and taste.
With a volume of this size it pays you to scope out what type of meal you want to prepare and then go ahead the test, test, test until you find the ones that work for you. Once you find them make a note of the page number and you’ll have a huge number or recipes you can use for the rest of your life.
The book is a classic and on Amazon.com you can grab a copy for about $20 second hand or about $170 for a new one. Now realise that most people buy these kinds of books with good intentions but in actual fact they hardly, if ever get used, so if you buy second hand expect a book in top condition, you’ll get a bargain and just can’t lose.
